More broadly, Passport is a document to passing ports of another nation or country, which means a person who used to prove his identity and citizenship by showing a document when passing (traveling) one port to another port. This document, passport, normally a small booklet called Passport (pass-port) must have verified and certified information identifying the holder such as address, date of birth, profession, photograph, biometric data, endorsement or stamps of departure, arrival and Travel Visa(s) of visited countries.

Passport with valid Visa will protect rights of the passport holder while being abroad and right to return home country on or before expiry of the visa.Primarily,

What are the documents required for the passport?

The documents for the issuance of the new passport are as follows:

  • Photocopy of passbook of the bank account in use, in any private sector bank, public sector bank, and regional rural banks.
  • The identification and residential proof – photocopies of voter ID card, PAN card, Aadhaar card, electricity bill or rent agreement, proof of gas connection, driving license, landline or postpaid mobile bill, spouse’s passport 
  • Income Tax assessment order
  • Educational certificate
  • Birth certificate 
  • Policy Bond issued by the insurance company.

Passport Renewal

A passport in India is valid for a period of only 10 years. To continue availing of the benefits of the passport, the individual needs to renew the passport before the expiry of 10 years or after the validity expires. A passport is widely accepted as proof of identification, address and age. Having a passport is extremely useful as it comes in handy at many points in an individual’s life.

Difference between Renewal and Reissue of Passports

While renewal of the passport is carried out in the event that the validity of the existing passport expired, a passport is reissued in the event of the following:

  • Expired or about to expire passport
  • Lost passport
  • Stolen Passport
  • Exhaustion of pages
  • Damaged or soiled passports
  • Change in personal details

In the case of renewal of passport, the existing passport is given to the individual as the renewed passport while a new passport is provided to the individual when he/she applies for a reissue of passport.

Types of Passports Issued in India

There are two main types of passports that are issued to individuals by the Ministry of External Affairs, Government of India. They are:

  • Ordinary passport: Ordinary passports are issued to ordinary individuals. These passports are for general purpose which enables the holders to travel to foreign countries on business or holidays.
  • Diplomatic passport: Diplomatic passports are issued to the designated members authorized by Indian government travelling to foreign countries on official duties.
  • Official Passport: Issued to designated Government officials or any other individual deputed overseas on official assignment who has been officially authorised by the Government.
